'PM, Gujarat police harassing me'

Benjamin Netanyahu in his home state on Wednesday, his once-close aide and VHP leader Pravin Togadia accused Modi of conspiring with the Ahmedabad Crime Branch to harass him and VHP supporters.

J K Bhatt (Ahmedabad Joint Commissioner, Crime Branch) has begun hatching a conspiracy against me and harassing our nationalist workers at the behest of political bosses in Delhi. In the last 15 days, how many times has Bhatt spoken with the PM? Their call details must be made public,” Togadia, Acting President of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, told reporters in Ahmedabad after his discharge from a private hospital in the evening.

The VHP leader had gone “missing” on Monday and emerged from a private hospital some 10 hours later in a reportedly unconscious state as his sugar levels fell drastically.

Togadia had claimed that a team of the Rajasthan Police had come for him in a shut 10-year-old case, though there was no instruction from chief minister Vasundhara Raje or state Home Minister Gulabchand Kataria for this.

He had claimed there was a conspiracy to kill him and this was hatched jointly by the Crime Branch and the Rajasthan Police. I have received communication from Rajasthan that the case in which I was supposed to be arrested was withdrawn in 2015. Then under whose instructions and who had come to arrest me? It appears Bhatt is acting under influence of political bosses in Delhi,” he said.

of democracy. Is this a crime branch or conspiracy branch? I have called my lawyer and shall initiate legal action against Crime Branch,” he said.

This Crime Branch is also releasing selective videos to television channels to sully my image. I want to tell the country that similar video of Sanjay Joshi in 2005 was made here. I shall reveal the names at an appropriate time. He was referring to the leak of a video of his whereabouts on Monday showing him in fine fettle.

Rapes are part of society: Top cop

In a petrifying incident, Haryana Police on Saturday recovered the mutilated body of a 15-year-old Dalit girl who was reported missing from Kurukshetra on January 9.

The girl was a Class 10 student from Jhansa village of Kurukshetra.

Police said that the victim was subjected to brutality, torture and gangraped by the criminals.

The main suspect in the rape and murder of the 15-year-old Dalit girl was a Class 12 student who has been found dead in Kurukshetra, Haryana.

RC Mishra, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Ambala Range, on suspected accused said, "We are investigating and scanning all CCTV cameras in the area. All people related to the case are being interrogated. After we receive FSL report, we can make a further comment.

In a disappointing and irresponsible relay of information, ADGP Mishra said, 'Rapes are part of society.

Half naked body of a girl reported missing from Kurukshetra has been recovered from Rajwaha, near Budhakheda village. We have registered a case against the unidentified persons and the investigation is on," SSP Arun Kumar said earlier.

The Dalit girl who was gangraped belonged to Jind district. Efforts were made to get rid of her body by throwing it into a canal.

The victim's private parts were also attacked and mutilated with a pointed weapon.

The victim was raped by more than one person and a pointed object was inserted inside her private part. There are multiple injuries on her body," head of Forensic Science Department, Dr SK Dhattarwal said.

She had left home for tuition on January 9. A police complaint was made in Jhansa Police Station by the girl's father.

The opposition Congress today demanded the dismissal of the ML Khattar government in Haryana, alleging a complete breakdown of law and order in the state after two minor Dalit girls were allegedly raped and murdered in separate incidents.

A Congress delegation, led by former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, submitted a memorandum to the Governor today and sought the imposition of Presidents Rule in the state.

The Congress leaders expressed deep concern over the recent incidents of rape-and-murder and "rising crime graph" in the state.

In the memorandum, the Congress alleged that the citizens are feeling insecure.

Law and order has collapsed in the state and criminals have neither fear of government nor law. This government is directionless and has failed to ensure safety and security of its citizens. A progressive state is fast turning into crime hub," according to the memorandum.

It further said, "many gangsters from UP are now turning to Haryana considering it as safe zone.

Senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said that on an average, a rape and a murder happen in Haryana every eight hours.

I think it is time that crime prevention and crime control is taken seriously by the chief minister, who is also the Home Minister of the state," he said.

It is an issue about the safety of the girl child and women. People in Delhi are as much affected by the growing crime incidents in Haryana as anywhere else, so I think Government of India should also take stock of this deteriorating situation and call the chief minister and reprimand him, if necessary," Surjewala said.

UN cuts food for east Africa as Bangladesh gets priority

UN cuts food for east Africa as Bangladesh gets priority

Cuts in food rations for 1. 5 million refugees in east Africa, due to funding shortages, could increase school dropouts, crime and malnutrition, a United Nations official said on Wednesday.

said Peter Smerdon, the World Food Programme (WFP)’s east Africa spokesman.

As a result, refugees in Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Rwanda fleeing drought and conflict have had maize, beans and vegetable oil rations cut by almost a third over the last seven months, he said.

In my 15 years at WFP, I have never seen this number of refugees, at this time of year, having cuts to their food rations,” he said.

Needs have gone through the roof for the whole of the humanitarian system, and donors really can't keep up with these increased needs. And the longer they continue, the more likely people will fall through the cracks.

The four east African nations provide sanctuary for millions fleeing drought in the Horn of Africa and protracted conflict in Somalia and South Sudan - the world's youngest nation - where civil war has created the continent's biggest refugee crisis.

WFP has only received about one-fifth of almost $360 million required to support refugees in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania in 2018, Smerdon said.

He warned that WFP would have to further reduce rations if funding did not come through.

If you a cut a refugee family's rations, they will take their kids out of school to save money on costs such as uniforms and books, and send them out to either find food or work,” he said.

In a refugee camp, crime is likely to go up as people are likely to go into debt as people are already pretty poor. Over the longer term, child malnutrition will go up.

Five rapes in 5 days: Haryana CM calls incidents ‘unfortunate’

In his first response to five rapes in five days in Haryana, chief minister ML Khattar on Wednesday termed the incidents as “unfortunate” and said his government will take strict action.

Khattar also enumerated steps taken by the government to address the situation, arrest the culprits and make the state a safer place for women.

We have made changes in the police administration and transferred a few officers. We started Dial 100 Project, will also begin 1090 Project so that women in danger can immediately contact police. We’ll look into matters, take help of counselling or legal action as the need be. We’ve set up special courts for speedy trials of such cases,” Khattar said.

In the past five days, assaults on women and girls have been reported from Kurukshetra, Panipat, Hisar, Jind and Faridabad. In some cases, the girls’ private parts were mutilated, a reminder of the brutal gang rape and murder of a physiotherapy student in Delhi in December 2016 that led to a huge uproar across the country.

The incidents come two days after the Khattar government made an announcement on Haryana’s improved sex ratio — 914 girls per 1,000 boys in 2017, which is an all-time high.

Khattar also appealed to political parties not to politicise the matter.

Earlier in the day, former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda lashed out at the ruling BJP government, saying “lawlessness” and “lack of leadership” were the main reasons behind increased crime in the state.

There is lawlessness in the state. The Haryana government has no leader, some ministers are angry, some are sulking and there is no direction,” Hooda told ANI after a meeting with Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki on the issue.

The latest incident of rape was reported on Wednesday from Hisar, where a three-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 14-year-old neighbour. The Haryana police has arrested the teen.

The family of a 15-year-old Kurukshetra girl who was gang raped and murdered on Friday, have accused the police of inaction. Medical examination revealed the girl was raped by multiple persons and a blunt object was inserted into her private parts. The girl was a good student and aspired to be a doctor, said her family.

A 23-year-old woman was abducted and gangraped in a moving car in Old Faridabad on Saturday. The woman was bundled into the car, raped and later dumped on Mathura road. The woman accused three persons of committing the crime. The accused are at large.

The semi-naked body of an 11-year-old girl was recovered in Panipat on Sunday. Police arrested two of her neighbours, who confessed to having raped and murdered her, the superintendent of police said.

A 48-year-old man allegedly sexually assaulted a 10-year-old girl and inserted a stick into her private parts in Pinjore on Saturday. Based on a complaint by the girl’s mother, the man, who was their neighbour, was arrested on Sunday.
